Having a gay friend doesn’t mean anything homophobic you say is going to always be received as a joke.

Whilst that’s obviously also true,I think it’s more common with the gay thing, as people tend not to use racial slurs as general expletives. Far too many people use the word “Gay” to denote something they don’t like, something they think is rubbish, etc, and it’s in no way acceptable.
